Rapid
Assimilation Executive Coaching for Business
Leaders
So often we find technical people "promoted"
into management responsibilities with little
or no preparation in the people side of management.
Perhaps they have been outstanding technical
business leaders, defining the direction of
a new product or process. As the organization
grows, they are logical candidates for leadership
roles.
However,
in many cases, we find that these newly-minted
managers report uncertainty or frustration
with these new responsibilities. For some,
it is simply a matter of administrative trivia
getting in the way of doing substantive technical
work.
For
others, though, a more complex problem arises:
how to balance multiple demands such as understanding
and managing change, handling internal politics
with other managers, and dealing with the
professional needs of an increasingly large
and complex staff.
Before we begin our coaching process with
an executive, manager or supervisor, we ask
a series of questions about:
- the
company's current business situation and
corporate culture
- the
manager's background, relations with others
and current role
- the
manager's department/division and relations
with other parts of the organization
Our objective at this point is to clarify
the nature of the executive's problem, determine
if all available internal resources have been
exhausted and finally, make an initial judgement
as to whether our services as an external
coach might workin their business setting.
Our
coaching approach, Rapid Assimilation Executive
Coaching, is well-suited to these needs. Starting
out with a customized assessment, we isolate
the most important needs for executive coaching
and management development and problem-solve
with the manager. We focus on real, everyday
business issues while helping them to balance
both the technical and people management sides
of their job.
We
often find, while conducting executive coaching,
that applying the principles of executive
community can be a useful tool as well in
designing a durable and comprehensive business
solution. Typically, the problems one new
manager experiences have occurred to others
in the organization, and this presents an
ideal opportunity for peer mentoring and networking
as well. Our goal is to gradually widen the
manager's skill set so that, over time, additional
and more diverse leadership roles become possible.
We
find that this executive coaching approach
works better than the default "total
immersion" process which transpires in
the absence of any plan to address the manager's
developmental needs. If you seek further information
